Alexander Rybak is a Belarusian-Norwegian singer, violinist, and composer who shot to instant fame all over Europe after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 with his entry for Norway. “Fairytale” was one of the most remembered performances in the history of this competition breaking record for most points ever scored until changes to the voting system were introduced.
Rybak was born in Minsk, Belarus. At the age of four years, he relocated to Norway with his family. From a tender age, he showed prowess in music-by demonstrating great skills in playing both the piano and violin. By his teenage years, he was already performing and composing, gaining recognition within Norway‘s music scene. It is through sharing attractive stage performance accompanied by masterly playing violin that would later become his signature.
In 2009, Rybak won the Norwegian preselection with the song he had written himself. “Fairytale” is based on real life experiences of Rybak’s own love story, set to folk-inspired melodies with modern pop elements. The dynamic performance at Moscow finals featuring spirited violin playing and dancing more than three minutes long kept millions glued to their television screens. With a grand total record-breaking 387 points-accolade support from both juries as well as televoters that virtually smashed every known previous tally in history books, he was crowned that year’s winner!
The success of “Fairytale” extended way beyond Eurovision. The song topped charts all over Europe and turned out to be a commercial hit, thereby consolidating Rybak’s place among the contest’s most successful winners. His Eurovision triumph further heightened interest in violin-led pop music and demonstrated the potency inherent in classical training that one could bring to contemporary songwriting.
Rybak followed it up with several albums, international tours, and collaborations. In 2018 he made a comeback to the Eurovision stage also representing Norway with the song “That’s How You Write a Song”. Even though he did not win this time around, his performance cemented the relationship that he still shares with the contest and its followers.
Alexander Rybak’s journey best underscores the transformative ability of Eurovision on an artist’s career, breaking records with “Fairytale” being long hailed as one of the defining moments in history for this contest. He proves what originality, charisma, and musical talent can do to capture millions of hearts around the world. Today Rybak is much more than just a Eurovision champion; he is an artist who brought together folk traditions and modern pop onto one of the world’s biggest stages.
