Céline Dion is often referred to as the “Queen of Power Ballads”. And not for nothing she is called like that. Technically skilled, she has an amazingly powerful voice.
Beginnings
She was born in 1968 in Canadian Charlemagne as the 14th child of Thérèse and Adhémar Dion for whom music was also extremely important. The fact that Céline was named after the title of French song only proves my point. Being a singer was her biggest dream from an early age. It became possible to come true when a music manager René Angélil, future Céline’s husband, came across the first song she composed with her brother and mother, titled “Ce n’était qu’un rêve”. That very moment he decided to help her to develop her musical talent.
The Eurovision Song Contest
After recording a few pieces and winning some competitions, Céline was chosen to represent Switzerland in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Ne partez pas sans moi”. And you know what? She won!
Changes
However, her further journey wasn’t easy as well. She had to improve her appearance and her English skills. After those changes she kept creating songs in French but also started establishing English ones. She got known worldwide thanks to “The Colour of My Love”.
Success
Singing in various genres, such as pop, chanson and soft rock, she took the music scene by storm. With over 200 million sold records, Dion is the best-selling Canadian recording artist, the best-selling French-language artist, and one of the best-selling musical artists of all time with a myriad of awards.
2022-2025
At the end of 2022, Céline Dion announced that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome hindering singing and even walking. One year later a documentary about her life, “I Am: Céline Dion”, was released. This year she performed in Paris to conclude the 2024 Summer Olympics opening ceremony and it’s not all as she is thought to appear as a guest on the stage of Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Switzerland!
