Teya & Salena – “Who the Hell Is Edgar?” – Austria | Eurovision Song Contest 2023 | Reaction/Comment

Have you seen the song which represents Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023? Is it going to be successful? Stay with me to the very end of this article and watch the video to find out if this entry’s going to win.

Hello, Guys!

This is your EurovisionaryVoice calling! I present my reactions/comments here.

This time I’m going to show you my honest comment on the song that will represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. This is “Who the Hell Is Edgar?” by Teya & Salena.

Let’s focus on the first snippet.

Well, frist things first. A very original introduction. Like a song promoting an Amercian movie. As for the lyrics a good move there’s a question that grabs your attention, doesn’t it?

The Austrian entry was chosen internally and romour has it that the majority of viewers are of the opinion that those responsible for that choice have just hit the nail on the head.

And this year’s song was created by the duet themselves, along with Ronald Janeček and Pele Loriano.

OMG, I wouldn’t expect that, now we have this I’d say almost classical singing some epic sounds like in this year’s Norwegian entry. I like this kind of the element of surprise. And that’s crucial while speaking about Eurovision entries because it doesn’t leave the audience indifferent, does it?

OK. But now, watching the video clip, I can see it’s done with tongue in cheek.

Next, we have a bridge that reminds me a bit of Lady Gaga’s and Ava Max’s style.

What’s the song about? Well, it definitely refers to the famous American writer Edgar Allan Poe who seems to reside in the artist’s body and makes them so creative. ???? Well, Shakespeare’s mentioned as well.

Well, should we go deeper into the analysis of the lyrics, why Edgar Allan Poe, why Shakespeare? I don’t think so. But, if you know some more details about that, let us know in the comments below! Thanks.

All in all, I’d say this is a decent performance in the video clip. But will Teya & Salena be able to make a good impression on stage, transfer these vibes from the video onto the stage in Liverpool?  We’ll see in May.

As each juror is going to rank all the competing songs based on the given criteria, I will also assign points in the same categories (eurovision.tv):

– composition and originality of the song, 9 out of 10;

– quality of the performance on stage (hard to say because the national selection wasn’t held this year, but you can see some live pre-party performance available. Staging, however, I assume will be more sophisticated in Liverpool), 7 out of 10;

– vocal capacity of the performer(s), 10 out of 10;

– overall impression of the act, 6 out of 10.

So the total is: 32 out of 40 that is 80%.

Will Teya & Salena’s song lead them to victory not to hell? We’ll see if they will get the best result for Austria. To do that they would have to win the whole contest (as Austria has won the ESC twice so far; it was in 1966 and 2014).

In the end, I can only say: Well done, Teya & Salena! Congratulations, Austria! I assume this song might qualify for the Grand Final but I’m not 100% sure if this will happen. I’d say – I don’t feel this song.

What do the bookmakers say about the Austrian entry? At this moment (29th April 2023) it’s in 8th place in the Grand Final and 1st place in the semi-final on eurovisionworld.com and in all probability, it will be successful in Liverpool.

Let’s hear it for Teya & Salena and the whole team!????
