Blanka – “Solo” – Poland | Eurovision Song Contest 2023 | Reaction/Comment

Have you seen the song which represents Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023? Is it going to be successful? Stay with me to the very end of this article and watch the video to find out if this entry’s going to win.

This time I’m going to show you my honest comment on the song that will represent Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. This is “Solo” by Blanka.

Let’s focus on the first snippet.

Well, frist things first. I’m referring here to Blanka’s performance from the Polish National Selection, which now we know looks different in Liverpool, but more on that in a moment.

I don’t want to go into details of this performance and the whole drama with Blanka’s choice as the Polish representative when almost everyone expected Jann to be the one to go to Liverpool because here I want to focus on the Polish entry that we have here in Liverpool. However, I’d like to admit that Blanka’s performance must have been good enough if the public placed her in the second place (otherwise she wouldn’t have won). She came first in the jury’s voting and having gained 12 points from the jury and 10 points from the public, Blanka became the one to go to Liverpool. And what do you think guys about this choice?

After that selection she came under attack above all due to her poor vocals in that performance.  She seemed to be open to attack on all sides. It must have been hard for her.

Later, in the interview in Liverpool Blanka suggested that her vocal performance was also infleunced by the technical quality that probably she didn’t hear herself well. She was also mocked because of ‘baby’ – ‘bejba’, that is the first word of her song, but to be honest I like Blanka’s attitude towards that – she approaches that with a great sense of humour and even repeats that word in some interviews herself.

I’ll focus now on rehearsals because as Blanka promised the final version of her performance is completely different than the one from the National Selection. And this change works in favour of the show. However, I have to admit that I miss the very beginning of the song from the National Selection which looked like from Ariana Grande’s performance or video clip. That was good.

What do we know after rehearsals?

The whole performace seems to be way better especially because of the vocals. I don’t know if Blanka’s got a kind of supporting vocals/backing vocals that support her. We see five people on stage. Recently it’s become quite common to have some supporting vocalists that are not present on stage.

What we see in the background is more or less similar to the National Selection – some summery elements, sunny positive vibes. Some tropical graphics in the background with some gestures presented on the screen as well, wich I find great. Maybe the audience will follow the hands’ moves and will remember that and repeat those moves in the same way they copied ‘bejba’.

Yes, and there’s a dress change during the performance and what’s the most intriguing – the dance break. And it turnes out the Blanka has practised dancing for many years. She’s a good dancer, isn’t she?

What’s more, after rehearsals we can see that these changes work in favour of the Polish performance because after being predicted to be a non-qualifier now it’s said to be ninth in the second semi-final and qualify for the Grand Final.

And what’s worth mentioning is the fact that Blanka participated both in creating the music and lyrics of her “Solo”.

All in all, I’d say this is a very good performance with decent vocals. Blanka seems to be quite confident on stage and this is a great plus.

As each juror is going to rank all the competing songs based on the given criteria, I will also assign points in the same categories (eurovision.tv):

– composition and originality of the song, 9 out of 10;

– quality of the performance on stage, 9 out of 10;

– vocal capacity of the performer(s), 7 out of 10;

– overall impression of the act, 9 out of 10.

So the total is: 34 out of 40 that is 85%.

Will Blanka’s song lead her ‘solo’ to victory? We’ll see if she will get the best result for Poland. To do that she would have to win the whole contest (as the best result for Poland so far has been the 2nd place in the Grand Final; it was in 1994). By the way, it was Edyta Górniak who finished second in 1994 and this year she was one of the jury members in the National Selection.

In the end, I can only say: Well done, Blanka! Congratulations, Poland! I assume this song will qualify for the Grand Final, especially because this year it’s only the public that votes in semi-finals.

What do the bookmakers say about the Polish entry? At this moment (6th May 2023) it’s in 24th place in the Grand Final and 9th place in the semi-final on eurovisionworld.com.

Let’s hear it for Blanka and the whole team!
